Semaine de la Critique
Cannes' boldest launchpad for first and second features
Tier 1In plain English
Semaine de la Critique is an independent parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival, run by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics since 1962, dedicated exclusively to debut and sophomore fiction features and shorts. It operates inside the Cannes ecosystem, giving selected filmmakers access to the Marché du Film, press, and buyers without competing in the main selection. It is best suited for narrative fiction directors making their first or second feature who have a bold, auteur-driven vision and are ready for serious international exposure.

Great for
- ✓ Launching first-time directors into the global art-house circuit with immediate credibility and press attention inside the Cannes bubble
- ✓ Providing access to the full Cannes Marché du Film, dramatically increasing chances of international sales, distribution deals, and co-production interest
- ✓ Championing formally adventurous, singular narrative fiction that might be too risky or unconventional for mainstream festival programming
Not worth it if
- ✗ Accepting documentaries, animated films, or experimental non-narrative work — the selection is strictly fiction, so those filmmakers should look elsewhere
- ✗ Supporting directors beyond their second feature — eligibility rules are strict, so established filmmakers are automatically excluded regardless of film quality
- ✗ Offering the same level of prize-driven commercial uplift as the Palme d'Or competition; wins here carry prestige but rarely move box office numbers alone

Filmmaker tips
- Confirm strict eligibility before submitting — your film must be a world premiere and you must have directed no more than one previous feature; any prior feature disqualifies you regardless of how small its release was
- Submit as early as possible and include a strong director's statement emphasizing your singular vision, as programmers are explicitly looking for distinctive new voices rather than polished genre exercises
- If selected, budget and plan for the full Cannes week — the real value is in the Marché accreditation and side meetings, not just the screening itself, so arrive with a sales agent or be prepared to take meetings independently
